In a previous post, I mentioned that I taught course in a horrifically lax program. This was a nicer way of saying that rampant plagiarism seemed to be an institutionalized standard. Currently, I use Turnitin.com, www.turnitin.com, to check for similarities among student works and previously available works. Turnitin.com is a nice tool to have on hand, but it is only one tool, an aid, to check for similarities and is not an absolute method for detecting plagiarism.

This is a great article. Robert, I agree that the software is only one side of the coin.
Some citation faults are skill-related as opposed to overt plagiarism.
