Trust or Distrust? Using Antiplagarism Software

An interesting article on the different approaches used in colleges and universities to the sticky question of plagarism detection software . . . to use it or not to use it. http://chronicle.com/weekly/v54/i25/25a01201.htm?utm_source=at&utm_medium=en

Hello Sue...

In a previous post, I mentioned that I taught course in a horrifically lax program. This was a nicer way of saying that rampant plagiarism seemed to be an institutionalized standard. Currently, I use Turnitin.com, www.turnitin.com, to check for similarities among student works and previously available works. Turnitin.com is a nice tool to have on hand, but it is only one tool, an aid, to check for similarities and is not an absolute method for detecting plagiarism.

Note: CMC provides access to anti-plagiarism software similar to Turnitin.com, called SafeAssign. SafeAssign is fully integrated with Blackboard. To learn more, follow this link: http://www.coloradomtn.edu/library/faculty/antiplagiarism.html.

This is a great article. Robert, I agree that the software is only one side of the coin.

Some citation faults are skill-related as opposed to overt plagiarism.

Here's a link to some practices related to the design of the assignments that serve to help students develop the citation skills and ethics:
